Itinerary Summary
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali, The Capital of Rwanda
Upon your first step on the land of thousand hills, you will be met safari guide/driver from African Safari Journeys for your 6 Days Rwanda Gorilla and Cultural tour briefing and thereafter you will be transferred to the hotel for a rest from the long hours’ journey trip.

Day 2: Kigali City tour & Cultural visit to the Gisozi genocide memorial site; Transfer to Volcanoes national park
After enjoying an early morning chilly breakfast, you will be picked to start off your day with a guided tour at the Gisozi (Kigali) Genocide Memorial site as you learn more about the real experience of the 1994 genocide from the storytellers. The Gisozi genocide memorial site is the final resting place where more than 250,000 victims of the Genocide were buried in Rwanda.
After lunch in the afternoon, we drive through terraced hills to reach Volcanoes national park, home to the endangered mountain gorillas. Upon arrival in the evening, you will go for a cultural walk to Iby’wachu where you will learn more about the Banyarwanda community and their tradition. Expect to be entertained in their traditional dances.

Day 3: Gorilla Trekking & the Iby’iwacu Cultural Village Tour
This is the long awaited day! It will require you to wake as early as 5 am, take your breakfast (if ready) or simply pack your food and get transferred to Kinigi Headquarters of the Volcanoes National park for the pre-gorilla trekking briefing. After the briefing from the guides and park rangers at the headquarters, you will be divided into groups of 8 people and afterward be assigned the gorilla group to trek in the forest. The gorilla trekking activity begins with a hike into the misty highlands and rainy forests of Volcanoes National and the trek normally takes between 2 to 6 hours depending on the group you are to find until you finally meet the mountain giants. You will be allowed to stay with the gorillas for a maximum of 1 hour (45-60 minutes).
Later return to your Hotel /lodge for a rest, and in the evening, prepare to go for a cultural walk to Iby’iwacu cultural village where you will learn more about the Banyarwanda community and their tradition. Be entertained in their traditional dances.

Day 4: Dian Fossey hike and transfer to Lake Kivu
Wake up early in the morning to a fabulous breakfast and embark on a hike up to the Karisoke research center, established by the late American Zoologist Dian Fossey. Learn more about the great history of Dian Fossey and how the activities that are done at this research center contribute to the conservation of mountain gorilla conservation. Afterward, return to the hotel, prepare and then we will transfer you to Lake Kivu for another day in waiting.

Day 5: Tour around Lake Kivu, Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park
As a normal begins, get up early in the morning waking up to a chilly breakfast, take a boat ride on the Lake Kivu, visit the coffee island to learn more about the Rwanda coffee. Enjoy the activities of the Rwanda people there as you learn how they brew the local beer that is on high demand in the country. Later in the afternoon, we transfer you to Nyungwe Forest driving through the scenic views of the Land of Thousands Hills with en route stopovers for photography and lunch, reaching Nyungwe in the evening to prepare for the next sumptuous activity of primates trekking in this Rwanda’s montane forest.

Day 6: Chimpanzee trekking, Cultural Walks and transfer back to Kigali
After a normal morning breakfast, we take you to visit the Batwa community and learn more about their unique way of behavior and how they feel proud about living in the forest. Later, set off for Kigali with en route visiting the King’s Palace at Nyanza, Butare Museums and Murambi Genocide Memorial Site. Depending on how we drive, you will approximately reach Kigali late in the afternoon to enable arrange your flight plans.
