Best Time to Visit Rwanda

Planning to visit Rwanda for an safari holiday or trip? The best time to visit Rwanda varies according to the seasosn of the year; i.e. between June to Mid-September is the long dry season; October to November is a shorter rainy season and it’s followed by a short dry season from December to February. During both of Rwanda’s dry seasons, there is often light cloud cover. Therefore, one can choose Rwanda at any time of the year depending on the safari expectations and interests.

Book Gorilla Permits

Rwanda gorilla permits cost $1500 and Uganda gorilla permits cost $600. These have to be acquired months before your trip to be assured of viewing the mountain gorillas. Read more about booking gorilla permits.

Rwanda Cultutural tour Itinerary


Day 1: Kigali & Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park

Upon your first step on the land of thousand hills, you will meet a safari guide/driver from African Safari Journeys for your 6 Days Cultural tour briefing and thereafter embark on a scenic road trip through terraced hills to Nyungwe forest national park, home to the endangered chimpanzees and 13 other primates that include the red-tailed monkey, White and black Colobus monkeys, Vervet monkeys in Africa.
Dinner and overnight at Nyungwe Forest Lodge/Nyungwe Hill Top Hotel/Gisakura Guest House.

Day 2: Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe Forest & Village Cultural Walk

After breakfast in the early morning, a trek into Nyungwe forest (A trekkers’ paradise) starts and here you have an opportunity to encounter with Chimpanzees, L’Hoest’s monkeys and blue monkeys around Uwinka after a less strenuous hike. After the chimpanzee trek, have your lunch at the lodge, take a rest and then spend the evening walking around the tea plantation and community learning more of the unique way of behavior of the communities in Rwanda.

Day 3: Transfer From Nyungwe Forest National Park to Lake Kivu

After an early morning chilly breakfast, we drive to transfer you to Lake Kivu with en-route stop-overs at the King’s Palace in Nyanza and Murambi Genocide Memorial Site, photography, and lunch, reaching the Lake Kivu for your dinner and overnight at Lake Kivu Serena Hotel/Gorillas Hotels Gisenyi/Paradise Guest House.

Day 4: A Tour at Lake Kivu and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Enjoy a chilly early morning breakfast at your hotel and then take a boat ride on Lake Kivu visiting the fishing villages and some interesting viewpoints of the Lake as you experience the scenic and landscaping unforgettable view of the Mount Nyiragongo. Afterwards, take lunch as we prepare for the drive to Volcanoes National Park for the next day’s gorilla trekking activity.
Dinner and overnight Stay at Mountain Gorilla View Lodge/Gorillas Hotels/Muhabura Guest House.

Day 5: Rwanda Gorilla Trekking & Iby’iwacu Cultural Village Tour

This is the long awaited day! It will require you to wake as early as 5 am, take your breakfast (if ready) or simply pack your food and get transferred to Kinigi Headquarters of the Volcanoes National park for the pre-gorilla trekking briefing. After the briefing from the guides and park rangers at the headquarters, you will be divided into groups of 8 people and afterward be assigned the gorilla group to trek in the forest. The gorilla trekking activity begins with a hike into the misty highlands and rainy forests of Volcanoes National and the trek normally takes between 2 to 6 hours depending on the group you are to find until you finally meet the mountain giants. You will be allowed to stay with the gorillas for a maximum of 1 hour (45-60 minutes).

Later return to your Hotel /lodge for a rest, and in the evening, prepare to go for a cultural walk to Iby’iwacu cultural village where you will learn more about the Banyarwanda community and their tradition. Be entertained in their traditional dances.

Day 6: Transfer From Volcanoes NP, Visit the genocide memorial sites, Return to Kigali

Have an early breakfast as usual then transfer to Kigali and upon arrival visit the Kigali genocide, visit the lively markets in Kigali’s suburbs for a local shopping and artifacts exploration afterward we transfer you to the airport for your return flight departure,
