This 3 Days Rwanda Gorilla Trekking & Cultural Safari will combine great Rwanda safari highlights of gorilla trekking and a glimpse into the Rwandan cultural by visiting the Iby’Iwacu cultural village. The mountain gorillas live deep in the jungles of the Virunga volcanoes shared between Uganda, Rwanda and Congo.

This safari will take you to the volcanoes national park which offers the perfect inhabitant for mountain gorillas found in northern Rwanda on the border with Uganda. The route to this park takes you through the communities where you enjoy the scenery of ‘the thousand hills’. Gorilla trekking is a special intimate experience that is hard to relay to someone who has never come close to the gorillas. You get to spend up to one hour with gorillas, after locating them with your ranger guide.

Day 1: Arrival, Kigali City tour & Transfer to Ruhengeri (Volcanoes NP)

Today you will be picked up from either the airport on your arrival or your hotel depending on where you will be. Our driver guide will them welcome you and share the program with you. You will take a short Kigali city tour exploring the major historic and cultural sites like the Kigali Genocide Memorial Center, Craft markets in Kigali, Kandt National Museum, and presidential museum depending on the time. After visiting some of these sites you will then have lunch at a restaurant in the city and enjoy local foods or continental meals depending on your preference, remember to let your driver guide know your meal preferences so he chooses the right restaurant. After the lunch in Kigali city we embark on the journey to the home of the mountain gorillas in volcanoes national park.

The drive to volcanoes national park takes you through different villages and town along the road. Enjoy the scenery of the thousand hills with great views of valleys and pathways to different homes and trading centers. Be expectant to meet the massive mountain gorillas on your trek after briefing from ranger guides early the next. We advise that you get enough sleep the day before so that you prepared for both a short hike and along hike depending on where the gorillas nested.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

This is the long awaited day for Gorilla trekking! On an early morning after your breakfast, we drive to the park headquarters for briefing and gorilla group a location.
After the gorilla briefing, start your trekking adventure through the forest start the search for the gorillas. Tracking gorillas is through mountainous forest and therefore, you are required to wear hiking shoes and a rain coat in-case it rains. Proceed with the trek in the forest searching for gorillas and on meeting them you will be allowed to spend 1 hour following then. Spend the afternoon at leisure recuperating from the gorilla trekking experience or take on an optional activity of visiting the musanze caves or the twin lakes.

Day 3: Iby’iwacu cultural village tour

On an early morning, reminisce yourself with the previous day gorilla trekking yesterday as you prepare for an experience of culture at the Iby’iwacu cultural village to have a taste of the history and culture of Rwanda and her people. Some of the members of this cultural village are former poachers who depended on the forest for survival, this cultural village contributes heavily to conservation of the mountain gorillas because they are able to earn from sharing their culture as opposed to poaching. This marks the end of your 3 day Rwanda gorilla trekking & cultural safari, as you are transferred to Kigali to rest at a hotel or take your flight back home.

Best Time to Visit Rwanda

Planning to visit Rwanda for an safari holiday or trip? The best time to visit Rwanda varies according to the seasosn of the year; i.e. between June to Mid-September is the long dry season; October to November is a shorter rainy season and it’s followed by a short dry season from December to February. During both of Rwanda’s dry seasons, there is often light cloud cover. Therefore, one can choose Rwanda at any time of the year depending on the safari expectations and interests.
